"LEMONBOY Album": A Touching First Album About Finding Yourself, Growing Up, and the Family You Choose
Lemonboy, a rising queer singer-songwriter from Washington, DC, has released his first album, simply called "LEMONBOY". This album has 10 songs and is more than just music, it’s a deeply personal story about finding yourself, understanding your identity, and the strength of love and the family you choose. Each song feels like a heartfelt message to the audience, letting them into Lemonboy’s honest and emotional world.
The project draws inspiration from Lemonboy’s experiences as a queer individual navigating life, complemented by the invaluable support of a vibrant community. This community is not only present in spirit but also in sound friends and collaborators who contributed to every layer of the album, from backing vocals to instrumentals. The Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington, DC, played a pivotal role, bringing warmth and camaraderie to tracks like “Bright.” This song, a standout on the album, offers a poignant reflection on Lemonboy’s upbringing in Catholic school and his journey toward embracing kindness over judgment.
Another notable track, “Ribbons,” delves into the quiet fears that bind us to self-doubt, hesitation, and the allure of the familiar. Written in Lemonboy’s late teens, it resonates as a cornerstone of the album, embodying the courage it takes to embrace growth and transformation. The title track, “Lemonboy,” brings the narrative full circle, weaving themes of resilience, community, and the beauty of imperfections. Initially a ukulele composition, it was reimagined for piano by collaborator Jack Zornado, adding depth and vibrancy.
The recording process itself was as collaborative as the music. Produced at Tonal Park in Takoma Park, MD, under the guidance of GRAMMY-winning engineer Charlie Pilzer, the album benefits from an intimate yet professional production that elevates its emotional resonance. Each track carries the fingerprints of those who have shaped Lemonboy’s journey, from longtime friends Emily and Jack Zornado to members of the Gay Men’s Chorus.
LEMONBOY is more than an album, it’s a testament to the power of community and self-expression. With influences ranging from Sara Bareilles to Boygenius, Lemonboy blends lyrical vulnerability with innovative arrangements, producing a debut that’s as inspiring as it is relatable.
