Exploring Owen Young’s “Three” EP: A Stirring Third Chapter in the Muddy River Series

Canadian singer-songwriter Owen Young unveils a deeply introspective and poignant journey in his latest EP, "Three." Hailing from Cayuga, Ontario, Young’s roots in the Southern Ontario landscape and his journey through fine arts and law lend depth to his musical storytelling. Living on a serene acreage along the Grand River, Young draws from his surroundings and life experiences to craft raw, emotive narratives.

“Three” forms the third installment of his ambitious four-part album Muddy River, a project shaped during the pandemic's introspective aftermath. While the previous chapters, “On a Day Like That” and “Town Line," explored varied themes, “Three” stands apart with its emotionally charged exploration of love, disillusionment, and societal reflection. This EP serves as a vessel for introspection, offering a unique lens into the human condition during trying times.

“Voices in the Dust”
Opening the EP is a hauntingly beautiful letter to an old friend. This track resonates with nostalgia and loss, evoking images of paths diverged and connections longed for. Young’s warm vocal delivery and minimal instrumentation create an intimate atmosphere, pulling the listener into his world.

“Runnin’ Down the River”
With a more upbeat tempo, this song acts as a lament by a child of the Sixties. The track reflects on the idealism of an era, juxtaposed with the stark realities of the present. The flowing rhythm mirrors the journey down a river, symbolic of both escape and reflection.

“That Could Have Been You”
Closing the EP is a raw and impassioned rant against self-interest and societal apathy. Young’s lyrics cut deep, highlighting the rampant individualism exposed during the pandemic. The music's raw sound emphasizes the song's depth and lingers in your memory.

Created during the chaos of the pandemic era, Three" reflects a world facing unpredictability and a decline in empathy. The grouping of these three songs as a standalone EP amplifies their shared resonance and significance.

Young’s ability to weave storytelling with emotive soundscapes is fully displayed in "Three." Each track stands as a testament to his artistry, inviting listeners to reflect on their own experiences.
