Scared of Sharks’s ”Last Train to Wyong": A Groovy, Post-Punk Tale
Hailing from the coastal corners of Mogareeka Australia-based post-punk band Scared of Sharks delivers a riotous and thoroughly entertaining anthem with their track "Last Train to Wyong." This song, brimming with energy and humor, is inspired by a real-life misadventure: drummer Tim Shady’s chaotic night at a Sydney rave, where he lost his keys, wallet, and phone before mistakenly boarding a train heading north to Wyong instead of south to Wollongong. The result is a groovy, tongue-in-cheek track that’s as infectious as it is memorable.
The song starts with a bassline that hooks you immediately, paired with sharp, punchy riffs that exude raw post-punk charm. "Last Train to Wyong" seamlessly blends humor with the genre's classic rebellious vibe. The storytelling takes center stage in the verses, punctuated by the cheeky reference to the viral "Democracy Manifest" bloke in the second verse. This playful nod has audiences grinning and dancing in equal measure. It’s a track built for live performances, and it’s no surprise that it’s been a fan favorite during Scared of Sharks’ East Coast tours in Australia.
This single is the final teaser from the band’s much-anticipated debut EP, Double Happiness. It’s a fitting representation of Scared of Sharks’ ability to take personal experiences, no matter how absurd, and transform them into lively, relatable punk anthems.
Formed in 2016 by brothers Taylor Schwifty and Jack Malolakis in the small town of Mogareeka, the band’s journey has been one of perseverance and evolution. Relocating to Illawarra in 2017 to tap into a richer music scene, they steadily built their reputation.
After debuting with "Beach Wog" in 2021, Scared of Sharks faced a turning point when Jack left for Europe in 2022. The band regrouped, bringing in Tim Shady on drums and Louis Crouton on bass, forging ahead with a tighter, more dynamic lineup.
Their efforts culminated in electrifying independent tours, including standout performances at the Port Kembla Festival and Melbourne’s Cherry Bar. With "Last Train to Wyong," Scared of Sharks showcases their knack for marrying humor, groove, and punk grit, a recipe that promises to resonate with fans and newcomers alike.
