Carl Liungman’s New Album "Change": A Deeply Personal Neoclassical Masterpiece
Swedish pianist and composer Carl Liungman returns with his third neoclassical piano album, Change. Following in the footsteps of his acclaimed debut album BORN (2020), which was recorded on a Fazioli grand at ABBA co-founder Benny Andersson’s studio, Change offers a more introspective and personal touch. This time recorded live at the Malmo Art Museum in May 2024, the album features nine original compositions that elegantly blend classical virtuosity with New Age atmospheres.
Liungman’s music, heavily influenced by modern giants such as Arvo Pärt, Riopy, Hans Zimmer, and Nils Frahm, reflects a deep emotional journey. In Change, he captures a profound sense of loss, reflecting personal experiences as his elderly parents fade away, while also conveying the turmoil and transformation in the world. Yet, amid the sadness and uncertainty, the album also radiates love and hope, offering moments of solace and renewal.
The album’s pristine sound, delivered through a Steinway grand piano, evokes both the brightness and warmth that Liungman’s fans have come to appreciate. While BORN was more energetic and assertive, Change carries a more contemplative and reflective tone. Each piece stands as a testament to Liungman’s skill in channeling complex emotions into beautifully melodic compositions.
Having studied classical music, jazz piano, and songwriting, Liungman’s experience is evident in the depth and breadth of his work. In addition to his solo piano releases, he has composed chamber music, jazz, and pop music for theatre, short films, art exhibitions, and poetry projects. With Change, Liungman cements his place as a neoclassical artist to watch, delivering an intimate and universal album in its exploration of life’s inevitable changes.
